If you think about it, it’s kind of funny that so many hipsters love Pulp’s indie-disco anthem “Common People.” After all, it could easily be about a lot of them: “Smoke some fags and play some pool / Pretend you never went to school / But still you’ll never get it right / ‘Cause when you’re laying in bed at night / Watching roaches climb the wall / If you called your dad he could stop it all, yeah / You’ll never live like common people”
If you think about it even more, though, it’s a perfect fit. Jarvis Cocker plays the role of the common person in the song’s lyrics, yes, but when you focus on the smooth pop production or glamorous music video, you’ll realize that it’s really all about one thing: style.
But man, is that style cool. So it’s probably best to not think about it and just enjoy — because there’s plenty to enjoy about “Common People.”
